Black Mountain is an important element of the Aboriginal and national capital landscape from deep time to today. It may be one of the better-known mountains in Australia because of research and studies done by CSIRO scientists and others. Let’s join Wally Bell, Ngunawal elder, and Mark Butz, history researcher and writer, as they describe the Aboriginal, historic and natural heritage of Black Mountain.

LATE CHANGE! Emeritus Professor Patrick De Deckker ‘Madagascar, the Red Island – A brief view of its natural history’ Thursday, 21 April 2022 - 12:30pm

This talk relates to a short trip to Madagascar in January 2020 and will provide a brief overview of its natural history, dealing in particular with lemurs, chameleons, and extraordinary plants such as the baobab.  Mention will also be made on the extinct elephant bird, and sadly also about the poverty on the land. This island is currently struggling for survival under the pandemic.

Dr Mark Clements - Which are the fascinating autumn orchids on Black Mountain? Tuesday, 12 April 2022 - 11:30am

The Spring orchids on Black Mountain are well known; but what is not so well known, is that many and very diverse terrestrial orchids flower in Autumn.

A small band of orchid enthusiasts and local experts have been monitoring all the orchids occurring on Black Mountain for more than 30 years. From the knowledge gained Dr Mark Clements will describe the differences of the Autumn Gems.

Plant Science Group - April talk Monday, 11 April 2022 - 10:30am

In this inaugural meeting for 2022, Zoe Knapp will talk about conservation projects at the ANBG. Zoe is the Conservation Manager, ANBG.

The talk will be held at the ANBG Theatrette.

Talks are planned for 10:30am on the second Monday of each month, February to November, except when that is a public holiday.

Walk - Curious about Autumn Orchids on Black Mountain? Sunday, 10 April 2022 - 9:30am to 12:00pm

Let’s join Jean Egan to see some Autumn flowering native terrestrial orchids and learn more about this fascinating group of plants. Jean has been involved in popular orchid walks for more than 10 years, and has done botanic art for many of the more than 60 orchid species that are native plants on Black Mountain. Jean is also a co-author of the Field Guide to Orchids of the ACT, and the recently published Field Guide to Orchids of the Southern Tablelands of NSW, including the ACT.

Walk - Curious about Plants and Fire on Black Mountain? Saturday, 9 April 2022 - 9:30am to 12:00pm

Join plant ecologist Michael Doherty for a walk and talk about fire patterns and fire history on Black Mountain and learn more about the varied responses of some of the common plants there to fire, drought and low nutrients. We will also discuss the relationships between the response of vegetation to fire, and fire management now and into the future.

Geoffrey Dabb 'The Strange Story of Ellis Rowan's Bird of Paradise Pictures' Thursday, 7 April 2022 - 12:30pm

To mark the centenary of Ellis Rowan’s death, Geoffrey, a long-time bird observer and photographer, has investigated the last years of this famous flower painter’s life when she made and exhibited pictures of various species of birds of paradise, which are held in the National Library of Australia.

Black Mountain Weeding Work Party Saturday, 2 April 2022 - 8:30am to 11:30am

Meet:  Caswell Drive entry on the mountain side. Drive from Belconnen Way southwards along Caswell Drive towards Glenloch Interchange, Woden, or Tuggeranong. Note the yellow diamond shape advisory sign showing access road on left (mountain side) and the blue and white “P” sign for parking. Pull into the carpark carefully.  Look for banners.
Bring:  A mattock, with your name on it, please?
Wear:  hat, sunscreen, long-sleeved shirt, long pants, gloves, stout shoes.
We shall break for delicious morning tea at about 10am.
