Plant Science Group - May Talk Monday, 9 May 2022 - 10:30am

Talks are planned for 10:30am on the second Monday of each month, February to November, except when that is a public holiday. The talks will be held at the ANBG Theatrette.

Weeding Work Party Saturday, 7 May 2022 - 9:00am to 12:00pm

Our next weeding work party is planning to remove more creepers from the areas close to the Frith Road.  
Meet:  Frith Road, Acton. Near the electricity sub-station. Look for banners.
Bring:   Other friends if you wish, as everyone is welcome.  
Wear:  hat, sunscreen, long-sleeved shirt, long pants, gloves, stout shoes.

Dr Lydia Guja ‘Rising from the ashes: seed germination in response to fire’ Thursday, 5 May 2022 - 12:30pm

The talk will look at immediate impacts of some Black Summer megafires, and share findings about responses to heat and smoke chemicals by seeds of alpine flora, grassy ecosystems and endangered shrubs.

Nancy Tingey ‘27 years in the Garden – The Story of Painting with Parkinsons’ Thursday, 28 April 2022 - 12:30pm

The first Painting with Parkinsons class was held in the ANBG on 4 November 1994, and has continued. Nancy says that one of the driving forces behind the program is the knowledge that creative ability is not affected by Parkinson’s and may even be enhanced by it.  Nancy is happy to sign copies of her book Magic Happens-The Story of Painting with Parkinsons, which is for sale in the Botanical Bookshop.

It may be one of the better-known mountains in Australia because of research and studies done by CSIRO scientists and others. Let’s join Wally Bell, Ngunawal elder, and Mark Butz, history researcher and writer, as they describe the Aboriginal, historic and natural heritage of Black Mountain.

LATE CHANGE! Emeritus Professor Patrick De Deckker ‘Madagascar, the Red Island – A brief view of its natural history’ Thursday, 21 April 2022 - 12:30pm

This talk relates to a short trip to Madagascar in January 2020 and will provide a brief overview of its natural history, dealing in particular with lemurs, chameleons, and extraordinary plants such as the baobab.  Mention will also be made on the extinct elephant bird, and sadly also about the poverty on the land. This island is currently struggling for survival under the pandemic.
