Off the Beaten Track - free guided walks in June Monday, 14 June 2021 - 11:00am to Sunday, 20 June 2021 - 2:00pm

A volunteer guide will take you to parts of the Gardens not frequently visited, to see beautiful plants in out-of-the-way spots. Each walk will feature some examples of work done by Gardens staff to conserve our vulnerable, threatened, and endangered native plants, as well as plants currently in flower.

Daily from Monday June 14th to Sunday June 20th, at 11am-12 noon and 2pm-3pm.

Meet at the clock near the rainforest bridge. No booking required.

Dr Alexander Schmidt-Lebuhn ‘How phylogenies inform biocontrol research’ Thursday, 10 June 2021 - 12:30pm to 1:30pm

Alexander, from CSIRO, will talk evolutionary relationships between native flora and invasive weed species to ensure the safety of biological control measures, particularly daisies, and an unexpected outcome.

Black Mountain Weeding Work Party 5 June 2021 Saturday, 5 June 2021 - 9:00am to 12:00pm

The next weeding work party will be in the Frith Road area behind the ANBG again where we will be removing more Red Passionflower.
Meet:  Frith Road extension, Acton, behind CSIRO and ANBG.  Park near the electricity substation.  Look for banners
Bring:  Everyone is welcome.
Wear:  hat, sunscreen, long-sleeved shirt, long pants, gloves, stout shoes.

Annie’s back, this time with heaps of gadgets and accessories relevant to photography. Annie has a vast knowledge about photography, and those who had the privilege of hearing her talk on’ composition’ last year will know the quality of her presentations.

Doug Laing ‘Fall of the Warbler’ Thursday, 27 May 2021 - 12:30pm to 1:30pm

Doug, a retired diplomat, will talk about the long migration of the sparrow-size wood warblers, many of which make a brief pit-stop to refuel in New York’s Central Park before continuing north. In May 2018 Doug was witness to this truly great spectacle. He will describe the experience, wonder at the drivers behind this migration, and look at some of the technology that is helping science better understand it.

Dr Alicia Grealy ‘Eggshell Collection Genomics: Approaches and Applications to the Study of Australian Birds’ Thursday, 20 May 2021 - 12:30pm to 1:30pm

From her experience as a post-doctoral fellow at ANU, Alicia will talk about developing techniques that offer opportunities to examine how diversity has changed across time. She found that the study of museum eggshells is an untapped resource of genomic information for thousands of avian species including rare and extinct taxa.

Dr Anna Howe 'Planting Democracy: Plantings, Places and People in the Parliamentary Triangle'. Thursday, 13 May 2021 - 12:30pm to 1:30pm

Anne, with a keen interest in urban geography, will ask how will the landscape of the Parliamentary Triangle, that expresses our democracy and changing national identity, evolve when facing increasing and diverse demands.

Chris, curator of the cryptogam collections at the Australian National Herbarium, will talk about her latest research on the fascinating and beautiful thalloid liverwort Riccia, and her collaborative projects with colleagues from Victoria to Valencia.
