The Gardens and the Friends held a joint volunteer recognition ceremony on 29 November on the new Friends Lawn.

The ceremony is held annually to acknowledge the important contribution volunteers make to the work of the Gardens and the activities of the Friends.

After brief speeches by Anthony Whalen, Acting Executive Director of the ANBG, and Neville Page, President of the Friends, we heard from special guest speaker Ariah Holmes. Ariah is the  Membership, Training & Capabilities Coordinator, with Volunteering ACT, and currently works with over 200 organisations to build healthy, safe, and sustainable volunteering programs. She is passionate about inclusive volunteering and supporting the wellbeing of volunteers in creative ways.

Ariah presented awards to participants in Gardens volunteer programs, including a plaque to recognise a remarkable 30 years of volunteer work by Doreen Wilson. Neville presented awards to volunteers in Friends activities and special-interest groups.

In summer we see not only how colourful butterflies are when they fly, but also how well “camouflaged” they are when resting on logs or rocks.

Members of the Friends can join a special walk to hunt for Imperial Jezebels, Australian Painted Ladies, Common Brown butterflies and others. We owe many glorious and sweet-scented flowers to the butterflies and moths that pollinate them. Join our local expert, Dr Suzi Bond to learn about butterflies and the plants they like in the ANBG.

Choose from two walks on Sunday, 22 January 2023: a morning walk from 10:30am to 12:00pm, and an afternoon walk from 1:30pm to 3:00pm.

The walks are for Friends members only, and are free. Places are limited, so bookings are essential. Find out more about what to wear, what to bring, and how to book.
