Library Connect, January 2023

This month’s Library Connect has the usual listing of new books and details of our new catalogue URI.  The library is staffed Mon - Fri 9.30 - 4.30.  Alex can be contacted by email or phone (02 6250 9480) if you need assistance.  The “click and collect” boxes in the Visitor Centre are still available for returning items, and Alex is very happy to leave items there for collection if that’s easier than visiting the library.

Thursday Talks are back!

Our Thursday lunchtime talks are back! Thursday February 9th sees Honorary Professor Penny Olsen briefly trace the 300-year history of Australian bird art — from the crude engravings illustrating accounts of the earliest European voyages of discovery to the diversity of artwork available today. Dr Heide Zimmer will be back March 16th to talk about Norfolk Island orchids. The Friends Calendar www.friendsanbg.org.au/calendar has information on all talks through until the 20th April.

Talks are held in the ANBG Theatrette from 12:30 to 1:30 each Thursday. We welcome gold coins donations. It is a good idea to reserve a seat at the talks you wish to attend. The booking link is included in the calendar entry for that talk.

Botanical Resource Centre closed

The Botanical Resource Centre (BRC), a former joint initiative of the Gardens, the Herbarium, and the Friends of the ANBG, has now closed. The Public Reference Herbarium specimens and the BRC's reference collection will be moved to the ANBG Library for storage. [Correction: an earlier draft stated that these materials would still be available to members of the Friends. This is not the case.]

The Gardens and the Friends held a joint volunteer recognition ceremony on 29 November on the new Friends Lawn.

The ceremony is held annually to acknowledge the important contribution volunteers make to the work of the Gardens and the activities of the Friends.

After brief speeches by Anthony Whalen, Acting Executive Director of the ANBG, and Neville Page, President of the Friends, we heard from special guest speaker Ariah Holmes. Ariah is the  Membership, Training & Capabilities Coordinator, with Volunteering ACT, and currently works with over 200 organisations to build healthy, safe, and sustainable volunteering programs. She is passionate about inclusive volunteering and supporting the wellbeing of volunteers in creative ways.

Ariah presented awards to participants in Gardens volunteer programs, including a plaque to recognise a remarkable 30 years of volunteer work by Doreen Wilson. Neville presented awards to volunteers in Friends activities and special-interest groups.

Friends' Summer Butterfly Walks

“Field Guide to the Butterflies of the Australian Capital Territory” by Suzi Bond with Steve Holliday & John Stein

In summer we see not only how colourful butterflies are when they fly, but also how well “camouflaged” they are when resting on logs or rocks.

Members of the Friends can join a special walk to hunt for Imperial Jezebels, Australian Painted Ladies, Common Brown butterflies and others. We owe many glorious and sweet-scented flowers to the butterflies and moths that pollinate them. Join our local expert, Dr Suzi Bond to learn about butterflies and the plants they like in the ANBG.

Choose from two walks on Sunday, 22 January 2023: a morning walk from 10:30am to 12:00pm, and an afternoon walk from 1:30pm to 3:00pm.

The walks are for Friends members only, and are free. Places are limited, so bookings are essential. Find out more about what to wear, what to bring, and how to book.
