It is 400 years this year since the 700 tonne Dutch East-India Company vessel 'Eendracht' under Skipper Dirk Hartog chanced upon our continent's west coast as the first European vessel to visit it. There is an opportunity here to brush up on what we already know about this historically-important early visit, how and why it happened and what its relevance can be argued to be. |

Dr James Petrie is a Research Scientist at CSIRO in the Plant Oil Engineering group. He is best known for his role in engineering canola seed to accumulate the long-chain omega-3 oils commonly found in fish oil. James also leads a project which aims for step-change productivity increase in plant oil yield by producing triacylglycerol in plant leaves and stems rather than seed alone. |

The Photographic Group will be visiting the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan on Friday 6 May. This trip offers an optional tour of the Gardens; opportunities to take photographs within the Gardens; and time to look around at your own pace. This is a full day excursion. Doug is a retired diplomat with a long fascination in natural history, ornithology and how things in nature are connected. He is an ANBG educator, volunteer guide and member of the Thursday Talks’ committee. In 2015 Doug Laing slowly travelled overland from Cairns to Cape York and dipped a toe into the waters of the Torres Strait. In this talk, which focuses primarily on the birds and flora of the region, he considers some of the hopes, challenges and contradictions affecting the Cape’s biodiversity during a time of dynamic change, including in land use and tenure. |

The Cleomaceae are a family of about 10 genera and 300 species throughout the world tropics and warm temperate regions. Australian members of Cleomaceae are thought to have speciated across tropical Australia, presumably from a single dispersal event to this continent. Russell will discuss the use of a wide range of research tools including phylogenetics, and SEM microscopy to allow relationships and taxon limits to be understood. The highest diversity of Australian Cleome species is in the Kimberley region and the ‘Top End’ of the Northern Territory. |

Irene will present a short talk on ‘Events Photography’ with a strong focus on using flash. After the talk, Irene will provide us with more information on a guided walk in the Gardens. Irene is a professional photographer and runs the Canberra School of Photography; she also lectures at universities and TAFE. Irene is a member of the Friends Photographic Group. This talk will discuss the plans for biodiversity improvement, through ecologically sensitive planting and protection of vegetation during and after construction. Matthew, a professional historian, will give an illustrated presentation on the natural values found between Canberra and Mt Kosciuszko. He will focus mainly on the natural values, looking at animals, birds, plants, geology, water, snow, fire, climate and some underlying human stories of our high country. Cultural aspects of some species' stories will be discussed, and a little bushcraft thrown in. As well as celebrating biodiversity along the route, the talk will look at several key issues including feral species, local extinctions and climate change threats. |
