Dr Kevin Thiele is the head of the Western Australian Herbarium and a practicing taxonomic and systematic botanist. He and his colleagues at the Herbarium and elsewhere regularly discover and name new species (and of course also rename perfectly good existing ones), and have to grapple with many of the issues that will be discussed in this talk. He also has a particular interest in the social context and implications of taxonomy, causing him perhaps to struggle even more than average with the conundrums of taxonomy and its relationships with science and society. |

Friends are invited to join experienced guides on an early morning walk in the Gardens with an emphasis on bird watching. The walk will start from the Visitor Centre at 8 am and go for approx 1½ hours. Gates will be open from 7.45. Some binoculars will be provided but please bring your own if you have them. |

Professor Peter Kanowski is currently Master of University House, and Professor of Forestry, Fenner School of Environment and Society. Peter's roles comprise academic and professional leadership; research and teaching focused on forest and environmental policy, and on sustainability; and policy learning and development, and community engagement, associated with forest-related issues. |

Roger will talk about the sampling strategies for assessing tree growth at the National Arboretum. Roger has found it most satisfying to make it possible for people to work together to produce major national and international projects that individuals working alone couldn’t do. Examples of his efforts have been: to see that the Friends and Volunteers programs were established at ANBG, the establishment of the Australian Plants as Bonsai Study Group, the establishment of the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia. |

The transport of food from paddock to shop is only one source of its impact on the environment. Between the energy embodied in fertiliser to food that is purchased and not eaten, there are many steps that contribute to the environmental footprint of our food. The talk will outline lifecycles of some foods commonly eaten in Canberra, and point to the steps where consumers can exercise a choice to reduce their footprint. Dr Sarah Ryan is currently a Fellow in CSIRO Land and Water and Deputy Chancellor at the University of Canberra. |

The 8th ‘Art in the Gardens with Friends’ exhibition will open on Saturday 21 March 2015. Art works will be on display in the Visitor Centre between 9:30 am and 4:30 pm every day until Sunday 19 April. All of the works to be exhibited will portray native Australian plants many of which can be found in the ANBG Gardens. Most of the works will be for sale and a percentage of all Exhibition sales will go to support the Friends activities. |
