Marie Stopes was one of the most flamboyant and influential figures of the early twentieth century. Liz will discuss Marie’s wide-ranging contributions to palaeobotany, and the way these were over-shadowed by her later career on birth control and the role of women in marriage, published in 1918. Dr John Turnbull ‘Lindsay Pryor: A Man of the Trees’ Thursday, 13 April 2023 - 12:30pm to 1:30pm

John, formerly from CSIRO, will cover the career of Lindsay Pryor (1915-1998). He was a forester, botanist, landscape architect and educator whose legacy involved the biology and cultivation of native and exotic trees in Canberra, elsewhere in Australia and internationally. Botanical Art Group 16th Annual Exhibition - "High Country Natives" Saturday, 8 April 2023 - 9:30am to Sunday, 7 May 2023 - 4:30am

The Friends of the ANBG's Botanic Art Group will hold its 16th annual exhibition and sale at the Visitor Centre Gallery, with the theme ‘High Country Natives’.

Most of the works will be on sale, with a proportion of the proceeds donated to the Friends of the ANBG to support the Gardens. Several works will be chosen to be donated by the Friends to the Gardens' permanent collection. As in previous years, there will also be a work to be won by the lucky winner of a raffle.

This year’s exhibition theme of ‘High Country Natives’ has inspired a variety of approaches to composition including landscapes of habitat of native flora in unique alpine regions, as well as traditional compositions of native plants from alpine and other areas.

Special Friends Preview - Botanic Art Group exhibition Friday, 7 April 2023 - 1:00pm

Members of the Friends are invited to a special preview prior to the opening of the ‘High Country Natives’ exhibition at the Visitor Centre Gallery.

The preview, when all drawings and paintings are for sale, commences at 2pm on Friday 7 April. The exhibition will be open to the public on Saturday 8 April until 7 May.  We hope you will find the time to pay us a visit to see the exhibition at the Visitor Gallery, either at the preview or at another time. Professor David Lindenmayer AO ‘Natural Asset Farming – key ways to integrate woodland conservation and agricultural production’ Thursday, 6 April 2023 - 12:30pm to 1:30pm

David, from ANU Fenner School of Environment & Society, will provide an overview of the key findings from 24 years of the Sustainable Farms project at the Australian National University that focused on temperate woodland conservation on farmland. Weeding Work Party Saturday, 1 April 2023 - 8:30am to 11:30am

Our next weeding work party is planning to remove weeds part way up Black Mountain Drive.  We’ll meet at lower gate of the ANBG’s Southern Car-park. To reach this place, come through the main entry gates, turn left immediately, and park in this bottom row. Dr Peter Thrall ‘Why Digitise Biological Collections?’ Thursday, 30 March 2023 - 12:30pm to 1:30pm

The presentation by Peter, from the National Research Collections Australia, will focus on digitisation projects and added value that these efforts can bring to biological specimen collections for use in research from about 15 million specimens. Dr Heide Zimmer ‘Orchids of Norfolk Island and their place within the Australasian Orchidaceae’ Thursday, 16 March 2023 - 12:30pm to 1:30pm
