In 2005 the Canberra Ornithologists’ Group began an ACT-wide bird count over the last weekend in October, involving up to 100 members each year. The talk will look at the overall results of the surveys, the variability between years, the influence of land use types and role the bird blitz plays in our knowledge of the ACT avifauna. Do Rufous Fantails come through your garden before or after the last weekend in October? Are fairy-wrens breeding by then? Are the koels back? These are some of the issues the blitz results can explore.

Barbara Allan is an amateur birdwatcher who has coordinated the bird blitz since its inception.
