Dr Haylee Weaver ‘Parasites of Australian Animals: Unseen Biodiversity’

Haylee, from the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment, will talk on the fascinating biodiversity of parasites inhabiting some of Australia’s iconic (and lesser known) animals. The parasites of Australia are a vastly overlooked component of ecosystems, and our understanding of how they contribute to ecosystem function is still being investigated.

Abstract

Haylee, from the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment, will introduce you to the fascinating biodiversity of parasites inhabiting some of Australia’s iconic (and lesser known) animals. The parasites of Australia are a vastly overlooked component of ecosystems, and our understanding of how they contribute to ecosystem function is still being investigated.

Haylee is a parasite taxonomist, with research interests in the taxonomy of parasites, and parasite-host ecology.  Haylee began her career in academia, researching and lecturing at the ANU, and later the University of the Sunshine Coast.  She now works for the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment, where she currently leads a team at the Australian Biological Resources Study.  Haylee’s work includes coordinating advice and expertise for queries regarding the taxonomy and nomenclature of Australia’s fauna and flora, administering a research grant program, and working with scientists to improve capacity in, and increase knowledge of, the field of taxonomy and systematics.
