ANBG Photographic Group Macro Workshop Friday, 29 March 2019 - 10:00am to Saturday, 30 March 2019 - 11:45am

Macro photography makes images of very small subjects or very small details of larger objects. The final photograph is equal in size to the original subject, or larger than life-size.

The workshop will be ‘hands on’ and will allow members to try focusing rails, macro lenses, flash/lighting systems etc. Members are invited to bring their macro equipment setup so that others can participate and learn. Specimens of native flora, seed pods, insects etc. will be available for photographing as well as the gardens adjacent to the venue. A practical session in the gardens will follow lunch.

Dr Ralph Ogden ‘ACT Healthy Waterways – an Update’ Thursday, 28 March 2019 - 12:30pm

Ralph is the new Program Manager, ACT Healthy Waterways Project, a joint initiative of the ACT and the Australian governments to improve the quality of water entering our lakes and waterways. It includes the construction of infrastructure – like wetlands, ponds and rain gardens, and involves research trials.

Guided walks during Eucalypt Week Saturday, 23 March 2019 - 11:00am to Monday, 1 April 2019 - 11:45am

Eucalypts are the sight and smell of the Australian Bush and our Volunteer Guides are celebrating this iconic species which has its own day:  National Eucalypt Day on Saturday 23 March.  Find out some amazing facts about these trees which come in all shapes and sizes and dominate our landscape from alpine regions to the outback and edges of rainforest on a one hour ramble through the ANBG.  The regular guided walks at 11am from  Saturday 23 March until Sunday 31 March will focus on eucalypts.  Please meet at the Visitor Information Centre about ten minutes before the start

Our 1st event for March is on Thursday the 21st  - A twilight walk/photography in the gardens. Gates will open for PG members at 6 to 615pm and gates close 7-7.15pm. Please identify yourself at the gate.

Mike, from the ANU, will discuss how the cypress family of conifers has been an important model for studying the way organisms came to be distributed, where they are found today, and how ancient changes in the earth's environment influenced their distribution

'More Than Just a Pretty Plant' - native plant use then and now

The Friends of the ANBG's Botanic Art Groups will hold their 12th annual exhibition and sale, with the theme 'more than just a pretty plant'. The works on show will feature plants with traditional and modern uses as sources of food, medicine, and materials for making practical objects and artworks. There is a special Friends’ preview on the afternoon of Friday 15th March.

Dr Alexander Schmidt-Lebuhn 'Phylogenetic Diversity and 'hot spots' for Conservation’ Thursday, 14 March 2019 - 12:30pm

Alexander, is from the CSIRO, and will explain how phylogenetic diversity works and its logic, and how it can identify areas of conservation priority and patterns of biogeographic interest.
