Biography

Dr Michael McKernan is a historian working in the field of Australian social and military history.  He has written twenty books and edited several more.  His best-known titles include The Australian People and the Great War, All In! Australia During the Second Wold War and Here Is Their Spirit (a history of the Australian War Memorial).  He has worked as an academic, museum administrator and battlefield tour guide but he always returns to writing history.  It seems to be a compulsion.  He has written about war and the home front, about rural Australia and drought, about sport and religion, and prominent Australians.  He is a regular book reviewer and commentator and a popular public speaker.  He has been a frequent researcher at the National Library of Australia since the current building opened in 1968.
