Bernard Fennessy
and the  "What's in a Name" Awards

Bernard Fennessy was a volunteer guide at the Australian National Botanic Gardens from 1992, when the guide program started, until just before his death on 6 August 2006. Bernard was much more than a volunteer guide. He was a wonderfully enthusiastic and talented educator who totally immersed himself in the Gardens. One of his lasting achievements is a series of articles entitled What’s in a Name? The articles are on the Friends’ website and can be viewed by clicking on  this link

Following Bernard’s death, the Friends decided to commemorate his love for and service to the Gardens by establishing an annual award for a newsletter article in the style which Bernard wrote. The award of $500 is presented at a memorial lecture in early August each year.

The rules and regulations for the competition are advised early each year, and the winning entries from the competitions are added to the website. Those for 2007, 2008 and 2009 can be accessed by the buttons below.

An appreciation of Bernard’s role in the Gardens is on the Friends’ website and can be viewed via this link.

And the story of Bernard’s long and distinguished working career, mainly with CSIRO entomology, is at
